Small operators, and why that changes your negotiation

McClain County has two active rigs and ten permits approved in the last ninety days, against roughly 1,188 producing wells. 32 wells first produced here since January 2024.

The operator list is unusual for the SCOOP fairway. Validus Energy drilled 13 of those wells, Blackjack Operating 5, Charter Oak Production 4 and Flywheel Energy 4. There is no dominant major here the way Devon dominates Blaine or Continental dominates parts of Grady.

A fragmented operator base has real consequences for a mineral owner, and they are not all bad:

• More pooling activity. Smaller operators assemble units they do not already control, which means more Corporation Commission applications and more elections that actually land on your desk. If you get a pooling notice, you have choices, and the deadline is short.
• More variable development pace. A small operator's programme can stop for reasons that have nothing to do with your rock.
• Less predictable offers. Without a single obvious buyer of the acreage, prices for McClain minerals vary more between buyers than they do in single-operator counties. That variance is your friend if you get more than one number.
