If your royalty check is late, short, or has stopped

Most royalty problems are administrative rather than geological, and most of them are fixable by you without paying anyone. In rough order of how often we see them:

1. A minimum payment threshold. Most states let a payor hold small balances until they reach a set amount or a set number of months. Your money is accruing, not gone, and you can usually request monthly payment in writing.
2. Suspense. A title question, an ownership change, or an unprobated death in the chain will put an interest in suspense, where it accrues rather than pays.
3. An address they cannot deliver to. The most common route from your pocket to the state unclaimed property fund. Send written notice of your current address and keep a copy.
4. A change of payor. Wells change hands constantly. A new name on the check usually means an acquisition, not a problem. See what happens when your operator is sold.
5. A decimal that changed. If your decimal interest moved and nobody explained why, ask before you sign anything. See division orders.
