Wyoming uses public land survey system. Mostly one grid, with a second one inside Fremont County.

The principal meridians

A principal meridian and its base line are the origin of a rectangular survey. Township and range numbers count outward from that origin, which means the same township and range numbers repeat under every meridian. The meridian is the part of the description that says which grid you are on.

  • Sixth Principal Meridian (1855). The great majority of the state.
  • Wind River Meridian (1875). A small set of townships tied to the Wind River Indian Reservation, in Fremont County. BLM Wyoming's county plat index lists Fremont as Sixth Principal Meridian and Wind River Meridian, with Wind River townships including T2S R3E through R6E, T6N R4E through R6E, and T9N R5W.

What we see go wrong in Wyoming

The Wind River Meridian townships carry low township and range numbers that also exist under the Sixth elsewhere in Wyoming. A Fremont County description with no meridian call is genuinely ambiguous, and it is the one place in the state where you cannot work the meridian out from context.
