There is no ticker symbol attached to it, no analyst coverage, and no acreage race in the trade press. There is just Mewbourne, quietly drilling wells in Ellis and Roger Mills Counties, and a handful of others working the same interval around them. Roughly 320 Cherokee wells have been spudded in the state since 2020, and nearly all of them sit in three counties. Two numbers say more about it than any description. Of the roughly 295 Cherokee wells currently producing in Oklahoma, **136 first produced since January 2025**, with Roger Mills alone accounting for 76 of those. And there are **40 drilled but uncompleted wells and 42 approved permits** sitting in the play right now, eighty two wells in the queue against 295 producing. Statewide, Roger Mills County is tied with Grady for the most rigs running in Oklahoma. That silence is the problem for mineral owners. A play nobody writes about is a play where offers arrive without context. Locally the Red Fork, Skinner, Prue and their equivalents, stacked and often developed several benches at a time. ### Cleveland & Tonkawa The shallower horizontal oil targets sitting above the Cherokee across the same counties, frequently held by the same units. ### Granite Wash & deep Morrow gas The deeper section under much of this acreage. No, and this is the single most common mix-up we hear. Northeast Oklahoma sits on the Cherokee Platform, a geologic province named for the same rocks but a completely different asset: shallow legacy oil around Bartlesville, Nowata and Vinita, largely drilled out and waterflooded, with almost no modern horizontal activity. The Cherokee play that operators are actually drilling today is in the western Anadarko Basin, in Ellis, Roger Mills and Custer Counties. If a buyer's mailer talks about a Cherokee boom under your Rogers County minerals, they do not know the difference. Who is drilling the Cherokee right now? Mewbourne Oil is far and away the most active, accounting for roughly 190 of the Cherokee wells spudded in Oklahoma since 2020. Behind them, Crawley Petroleum, Upland, Citizen Energy, SandRidge, Devon, Nadel & Gussman, Duncan Oil, Rockies Resources and Mach Natural Resources have all drilled here. Mewbourne is privately held and does not chase headlines, which is part of why this play stays quiet relative to how much capital is going into it. The quiet ended a little in 2026: SandRidge bought fellow Cherokee driller Rockies Resources in June, and by late summer Mewbourne had five rigs running in Roger Mills County alone. Why am I suddenly getting offers on minerals out here? Because a well was permitted, spudded or completed on or near your section, and buyers watch that filing before you ever see a check. The gap between what a mailer offers and what a new Cherokee unit is actually worth is widest in the months right after a permit, when the operator knows more than you do.
