Burke County runs along the Canadian border in northwest North Dakota, and it holds two entirely different assets under the same county line. The southwest corner catches the thinning edge of the Bakken. The rest of the county produces from Madison Group conventional pools at Northwest McGregor, Flaxton, and Portal that predate the shale era by decades.

Those are not the same investment and should not carry the same multiple. Bakken flank acreage is priced off modern well decline and whatever remaining locations the spacing unit supports. Madison stripper production is priced off a long, shallow, predictable tail with essentially no development upside. Continental, EOG, Chord, Petro-Hunt, Hunt, Cobra, Eagle Operating, and about twenty other operators carry production here.

Burke has no tribal lands. It does have federal refuge surface and classic homestead era severances, so split estate is common and worth establishing before anyone quotes a price. Send us whatever paperwork you have, or just a county and a family name, and we will tell you what you own, what it is worth, and whether you should keep it.

Rigs are currently active; permits are those approved in the last 90 days; completions are wells reporting first production in the last 90 days, which lags by state. A zero does not mean nothing is happening, only that nothing was reported in that window. Activity like this is exactly what moves mineral value. Questions

## Straight answers for Burke County owners

Is anyone drilling in Burke County right now?
Not currently. Burke has no rigs and no recent permits in the public window. Roughly 467 wells are producing out of about 2,100 drilled, and county output peaked in 2014. That does not make an interest here worthless, but it does mean the value sits in the existing production tail rather than in undrilled locations, and it should be priced that way.

What is my Burke County mineral interest actually worth?
It depends heavily on whether you are on the Bakken flank in the southwest or on the older Madison production. A Bakken royalty with a modern well behind it is valued off decline. A Madison stripper interest is valued off a long, flat, predictable tail and is worth less per dollar of current income because there is no development upside behind it. We will tell you which one you have and show the arithmetic for each.

There is a wildlife refuge on the land my minerals are under. Does that matter?
Possibly. Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge covers roughly 26,900 acres in Burke and part of Des Lacs Refuge extends here as well, which creates federal surface with variable mineral status underneath. Split estate is common in this county and it is worth establishing whether your minerals are fee, federal, or state before anyone quotes you a number. We will run that for free.
