North Dakota is unusual in that the same agency that manages the state's own minerals also holds its unclaimed property. Search your name, every deceased relative's name, maiden names, and initials. Mineral proceeds in North Dakota generally become reportable as unclaimed property after sitting three years, so money from the boom era has long since arrived there. ## What if the money is still at the operator?

North Dakota law also puts teeth behind late payment. Under N.D.C.C. 47-16-39.1, royalties are generally due within 150 days of the first sale of production, and unpaid royalties without lawful justification accrue interest at 18 percent. ## Is unclaimed money the same as abandoned minerals?
