## How land is surveyed in Utah

**Utah uses public land survey system.** Two origins, and the productive basin sits where they meet.

## The principal meridians

A principal meridian and its base line are the origin of a rectangular survey. Township and range numbers count outward from that origin, which means the same township and range numbers repeat under every meridian. The meridian is the part of the description that says which grid you are on.

- **Salt Lake Meridian** (1855). Most of Utah. The base and meridian cross at Main Street and South Temple in downtown Salt Lake City.

- **Uintah Special Meridian** (1875). Northeastern Utah, with its base and meridian crossing at Roosevelt. It was created to survey the Uintah Valley Indian Reservation, originally around two million acres, subdivided into 640 acre sections and then 40 acre allotments from 1875. It is the only meridian carrying the Special designation.

## What we see go wrong in Utah

This matters more in Utah than almost anywhere, because the Uinta Basin is the productive ground and it is exactly where the two grids overlap in numbering. Every township and section in Utah is numbered off one of two origins. A Duchesne or Uintah County description without S.L.M. or U.S.M. on it is not a complete description.
