## How land is surveyed in Oklahoma

**Oklahoma uses public land survey system.** PLSS throughout, on two grids that do not connect.

## The principal meridians

A principal meridian and its base line are the origin of a rectangular survey. Township and range numbers count outward from that origin, which means the same township and range numbers repeat under every meridian. The meridian is the part of the description that says which grid you are on.

- **Indian Meridian** (1870). Governs all of Oklahoma except the Panhandle. Its initial point sits about a mile south of old Fort Arbuckle, roughly six miles west of Davis in Murray County.

- **Cimarron Meridian** (1881). Governs the Panhandle, the old No Man's Land. Its initial point is where 103 degrees west longitude meets 36 degrees 30 minutes north latitude. The 103rd was run twice before and missed both times, by about four miles in 1857 and about two and a half in 1859.

## Allotment land does not behave like homestead land

Much of eastern Oklahoma passed by Indian allotment rather than by homestead patent, so it will not appear in BLM's General Land Office records at all. Title for trust and restricted allotted land is recorded federally with the BIA Land Titles and Records Office, which is a separate system from both the county clerk and BLM.

## What we see go wrong in Oklahoma

Almost every Oklahoma description ends in I.M. or C.M., and that suffix is not decoration. A T2N-R5E in the Panhandle is entirely different ground from a T2N-R5E under the Indian Meridian. If a description reaches us without the meridian and the county is in the Panhandle, we go find it before we do anything else.
